Anti-aging treatments you can try at home
Don’t have the time or money for a doctor’s visit? Try these anti-aging treatments at
home.
Over the years, our skin receives damage from a variety of sources—the sun, acne, and stress. The discoloration
and wrinkles that form can be difficult to take for some people. If you feel frustrated by your aging skin, try
some of the at-home anti-aging treatments available in stores.
Creams and lotions:
There are many over-the-counter products available to buy that contain ingredients that help combat aging skin. For
example, products containing hydroquinone, a bleaching agent that suppresses melanin production in your skin, can
even out your skin tone and eliminate blotchiness caused by sun damage. Many hydroquinone products contain
additional vitamins and herbs that are purported to help skin, but the efficacy of these ingredients is
inconclusive.
Many scientific studies have shown that alpha-hydroxy acid helps improve skin texture and stimulates skin collagen
growth. Retinoic acid has also been shown to improve skin texture. Other ingredients that might improve skin
texture include vitamin C, vitamin E, and salicylic acid. Additionally, ingredients such as kojic acid, thyme,
lavender, and peppermint are also rumored to improve the appearance of skin. However, these claims remain
unsubstantiated.
Microdermabrasion Kits:
Microdermabrsion is a procedure that uses tiny crystals to polish and buff away irregularities in your skin to
improve texture. The procedure uses a special tool to shoot crystals at the skin, and then vacuum dead skin cells
away. Although this was traditionally a procedure done in spas and clinics, there are a variety of
microdermabrasion kits available for you to use at home. The at-home kit features a wand that performs the function
of the special spa equipment, buffing away dead skin to reveal healthy, smoother skin. The battery powered wand
also has the benefit of massaging your skin, thereby improving blood circulation throughout the surface of your
skin on your face. Many women report that microdermabrasion gives them a healthy glow. Microdermabrasion is
attractive to many because it offers an inexpensive, painless method for improving aging skin. It also requires no
downtime—a must with many working women.
At home chemical peels:
This procedure involves applying an acid to the skin and allowing the acid to soak through your skin before wiping
it off. Allowing the acid to penetrate the skin causes a reaction similar to a sunburn, making the skin peel and
turn red. Acids used in this procedure include glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or lactic acid. However, at home
chemical peels are now widely available so you can recreate the effects without the hassle of visits to the doctor.
Try not to go beyond a 30% concentration when buying an at-home peel, as anything stronger might cause permanent
damage to your skin.
